How to check YouTube title length

Checking YouTube title length with this tool takes three steps, and the preview shows where each layout cuts it.

  1. Type your title

    The counter shows characters used out of 100.

  2. Read the previews

    See your title at YouTube’s font sizes in search, on the home feed and on mobile, and whether each one shows it in full.

  3. Move keywords forward

How many characters before a YouTube title is cut off?

Titles are cut off by width, not by character count. Search results on desktop usually show about 60 to 70 characters, the home feed shows two lines, and mobile shows fewer. Wide letters such as W and M use more room than narrow ones such as i and l, so two titles of the same length can be cut at different points.

That’s why the previews above draw your title at YouTube’s own font sizes and line limits instead of guessing from a number. Keep the most important words in the first 60 characters and the title reads well everywhere.

YouTube description character limit

The YouTube description character limit is 5,000 characters. Only about the first 157 characters show under the video before “Show more”, and the same opening lines often appear in search results, so start with what the video is about.

Hashtags in the description count toward the limit. The first three can appear above the title.

YouTube tag character limit

All the tags on a video share a 500-character limit. The commas between tags count, and a tag that contains a space is wrapped in quotation marks, which adds 2 more. Individual tags of more than about 30 characters may be rejected. The Tags field in the counter applies these rules.

YouTube Shorts and comment limits

YouTube Shorts titles share the regular 100-character limit, but Shorts show far less of the title on screen, so 40 characters or fewer reads best. A comment can be up to 10,000 characters, and a channel description up to 1,000.
