How the word counter counts

Word and character counts differ between tools because each one follows its own rules. These are ours, so you always know what a number means.

CountHow it’s countedExample
WordsRuns of letters or numbers separated by spaces. Hyphenated words count once. Each Chinese or Japanese character counts as one word.state-of-the-art = 1
CharactersEvery character you see, including spaces and punctuation. An emoji with a skin tone, or several joined into one, counts once.Hi there! = 9
Characters without spacesAll characters except spaces, tabs and line breaks.Hi there! = 8
SentencesText ending in a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. Decimals like 3.5 don’t end a sentence.Hi. It’s 3.5 km! = 2
Paragraphs and linesEvery line break starts a new line. Each line with text in it is a paragraph, so blank lines are ignored.3 lines, 1 blank = 2
Reading timeWords divided by 238 per minute, the average silent reading speed for English non-fiction.1,000 words = 4m 12s
Speaking timeWords divided by 140 per minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or presentation.1,000 words = 7m 9s
PagesWords divided by 500, a single-spaced page in 12-point type. Double-spaced, a page holds about 250.1,000 words = 2 pages
SyllablesEstimated for English words from their vowel groups, the same approach readability formulas use.counter = 2

What is a word and character counter?

A word and character counter is a tool that counts the words and characters in a piece of text, along with sentences, paragraphs and reading time. Writers use it to hit a word count, students to meet essay limits, and marketers to fit a title, meta description or social post inside its character limit.

This one counts as you type and runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded. It also checks your text against common limits, such as a 60-character title tag, a 160-character meta description and a 280-character post on X, and shows your most-used words for keyword density.

When character counts matter

  • Essays and applications: many have strict word or character limits, often counted with spaces.
  • SEO: title tags show about 50–60 characters in search results and meta descriptions about 150–160.
  • Social media: every platform has its own limit. The tool directory has a counter for each one.

Word and character counter FAQ

Is my text saved or uploaded anywhere?

No. The counter runs entirely in your browser, so your text is never sent to a server. That makes it safe for drafts, assignments and confidential documents. Refreshing the page clears it.

Does the character count include spaces?

Yes, in the main Characters total, because most platforms and forms count them. Characters without spaces is shown separately for assignments that exclude them.

How is reading time calculated?

Your word count divided by 238 words per minute, the average silent reading rate for English non-fiction. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a typical presentation pace.

Does the word counter work in other languages?

Yes. Characters are counted correctly in every script. Chinese and Japanese don’t use spaces between words, so each of their characters counts as one word. For script-specific counts, use the Chinese or Japanese character counter.

Why does Twitter (X) show a different character count?

X weights some characters. Every link counts as 23, and emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2. The Twitter character counter applies those rules for you.

How many words is 1,000 characters?

About 165 words in English if the count includes spaces. The Characters to Words Calculator gives estimates for 20 languages.
