Letter Counter
Count only the letters in your text, without spaces, numbers or punctuation. The letter counter shows the total number of letters, uppercase and lowercase letters, vowels and consonants, letters per word and a letter count for every line, in any language.

- Count per line

Every line with text, with its letter and character count. Handy for names, headlines, crossword answers and lists.

How to count letters
Counting the letters in a word, a name or a whole text takes a few seconds.
-
Type or paste your text
A single word, a name, a headline, a list or a full document. The letter count updates as you type.
-
Choose which letters count
All letters in any language (default), Latin letters with accents such as é and ñ, or plain A to Z only.
-
Read the results
Total letters, upper and lower case, vowels and consonants, and a table with the letter count of every line, handy for lists of names or answers.
“Hello, world!” has 13 characters but only 10 letters: the comma, the space and the exclamation mark aren’t letters.
Letters vs characters
A character count includes everything you type. A letter count includes only the letters.
| Text | Characters | Letters |
|---|---|---|
| Hello, world! | 13 | 10 |
| Mary-Jane O’Neil | 16 | 13 |
| 21,000 km | 9 | 2 |
| Café | 4 | 4 (é counts as one letter) |
| Привет | 6 | 6 |
For the full character count, with and without spaces, use the [word and character counter](/).

Counting letters in other languages
A letter is any character the Unicode standard classes as a letter, so the counter works for every alphabet:
- Accented letters such as é, ü and ñ count as one letter each, even when they’re typed as a base letter plus an accent mark.
- Other alphabets such as Cyrillic (Привет), Greek, Arabic and Hebrew are counted letter by letter.
- Chinese and Japanese characters count as letters too. For those languages, the Chinese Character Counter and the Japanese Character Counter give a fuller breakdown.
Choose Plain A–Z only to count just the 26 letters of the basic English alphabet; accented letters are then left out of the total.
When you need a letter count
A letter count matters whenever space is tight or rules are set in letters rather than characters.
| Use | Why letters matter |
|---|---|
| Crosswords and word games | Answers are measured in letters: spaces and hyphens in a phrase don’t fill a square. |
| Names and personalised items | Engraving, embroidery, jerseys and signs often have a limit on letters. |
| Baby names and usernames | Compare how long names are, letter for letter. |
| Teaching and phonics | Count the letters, vowels and consonants in spelling words. |
| Puzzles and codes | Check a word’s length, or prepare a text for frequency analysis. |
