How to check Instagram character limits

Checking an Instagram caption or bio against its character limit takes three steps.

  1. Choose the field

Caption, bio, name, username, comment, DM or note. The limit changes with it.

  2. Paste your text

The counter shows characters used and left, hashtags against the limit, and what shows before “more”.

  3. Fix what’s flagged

Trim the highlighted overflow, cut hashtags down to five, or move the key line into the first 125 characters.

Example

A 246-character caption fits easily under 2,200, but only the first 125 characters show in the feed. Put your hook there, before the “more” cut.

Instagram caption character limit

The Instagram caption character limit is 2,200 characters, and it covers feed posts, reels and carousels alike. Hashtags, mentions, spaces and line breaks all count toward it.

Only about the first 125 characters show in the feed before “more”, so a caption can be well inside the limit and still lose its main point. Put the hook, the question or the call to action first.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

Since December 2025 Instagram has been rolling out a limit of five hashtags per post or reel, down from 30. Some older accounts may still allow more for now, but five is the number to plan for.

Instagram bio character limit

The Instagram bio character limit is 150 characters. Spaces, line breaks and emoji count, and most emoji count as 2, so an emoji-heavy bio fills up faster than it looks. Your website link and category are separate fields and don’t use bio characters.

To space a bio over several lines, use the Instagram line break generator, which keeps blank lines that Instagram would otherwise remove.

Instagram name and username character limits

Your name and your username are different fields, and both are capped at 30 characters.

  • Name: shown above your bio and searchable. Spaces, emoji and most symbols are allowed.
  • Username: your @handle and profile address. Only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, with no spaces.

Instagram DM and notes character limits

A direct message can be up to 1,000 characters; split longer messages into parts. Notes, the short updates shown above the inbox, are limited to 60 characters.
