Spacebar Counter

Count how many times you press the spacebar, or test your spacebar speed with a 1 to 60 second timer. Only real presses count: holding the key down doesn’t add repeats, so every score is fair.

How to use the spacebar counter

Using the spacebar counter takes three steps.

  1. Choose a timer

“No timer” counts for as long as you like. Pick 1 to 60 seconds for a spacebar speed test.

  2. Press the spacebar

With a timer, it starts on your first press. The page won’t scroll while you press. On a phone, tap the Space key on screen.

  3. Read your score

Total presses, presses per second and your best score for that timer.

Example

75 presses in a 15-second test is 5.00 presses per second.

What is a spacebar counter?

A spacebar counter counts how many times you press the spacebar. People use it as a spacebar speed test (also called a spacebar clicker or spacebar click test) to see how fast they can press, to check a keyboard, or just for a challenge with friends.

Your speed is shown in presses per second: total presses divided by the length of the timer.

Spacebar test timers

Each spacebar test timer measures something slightly different.

TimerGood for
No timerCounting presses, or checking that every press registers.
1 or 2 secondsYour fastest burst of speed.
5 or 10 secondsThe classic spacebar speed test.
15 or 30 secondsSpeed and stamina together.
60 secondsAn endurance test: can you keep your pace for a full minute?

Why holding the spacebar doesn’t count

When you hold a key down, your computer starts repeating it automatically after a short delay, the way holding a letter key types aaaaa. Browsers mark those repeats, and the counter ignores them, so you can’t raise your score by holding the spacebar down. The number of ignored repeats is shown next to your score.

Test your keyboard’s spacebar

Choose No timer and press the spacebar slowly, once at a time. The count should go up by exactly one each time.

  • If a press doesn’t register, the switch or its stabiliser may need cleaning.
  • If one press counts twice, the switch may be “chattering”, a common sign of wear.

Try a few presses in different spots along the bar: a long key that only registers in the middle may have a sticking stabiliser.

Tips for a faster spacebar score

A few small changes can raise your spacebar speed.

TipWhy it helps
Rest your hand so only your thumb movesLess movement means faster, steadier presses.
Press near the middle of the barThe middle registers most reliably on most keyboards.
Use short, light tapsYou only need to press far enough to register, not to the bottom.
Warm up with a short timer firstA 5-second round loosens your hand before a longer test.

Take breaks between rounds, and stop if your hand or wrist aches.

Spacebar counter FAQ

What is a spacebar counter?

A tool that counts your spacebar presses, with or without a timer. With a timer, it works as a spacebar speed test and shows your presses per second.

When does the timer start?

On your first press of the spacebar, so the time it takes you to get ready doesn’t count.

Does holding the spacebar down count?

No. Holding a key makes your computer repeat it automatically; those repeats are ignored and shown separately.

Can I use the spacebar counter on a phone?

Yes. Tap the large Space key on the page. Each tap counts as one press.

Why doesn’t the page scroll when I press the spacebar?

Scrolling is turned off on this page so that every press counts. It works normally in text boxes.

Is my best score saved?

Yes, for each timer, in this browser on this device. It’s never sent to our server.

Is the spacebar counter free?

Yes. It’s free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many tests you take.
