Count the emoji in any text, caption or chat. The emoji counter finds every emoji, including skin tones, flags and combined emoji like 👨‍👩‍👧, counts each one once, and lists them with their code points and length, so you know exactly how much space they take up.

Why one emoji can be several characters

Many emoji are built from several Unicode code points. The emoji counter shows them as one, the way you see them, but apps that count code points or UTF-16 units see more.

EmojiWhat it’s made ofCode pointsUTF-16 units
😀One code point12
❤️Heart + emoji style selector22
👍🏽Thumbs up + skin tone24
🇵🇰Two regional-indicator letters (P + K)24
1️⃣Digit + style selector + keycap33
👨‍👩‍👧Man + woman + girl joined by zero-width joiners58
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Black flag + tag letters (Scotland)714

How platforms count emoji

Different apps count emoji differently, which is why a caption that fits in one app can be too long in another:

  • X (Twitter) counts every emoji as 2 characters, however many code points it’s built from. The Twitter Character Counter applies this rule for you.
  • Apps that count UTF-16 units, as many programming languages do by default, count 😀 as 2 and 👨‍👩‍👧 as 8.
  • Apps that count what you see count every emoji as 1.

The UTF-16 units column in the emoji list shows the worst case for each emoji, so you can see which ones are “expensive”.

How many emoji are there?

The Unicode Consortium’s emoji charts list 3,972 emoji in Emoji 18.0, counting every skin-tone variation, flag and combined emoji as its own entry. New emoji are added most years, and phones show them once their system fonts are updated, so a new emoji can look like a box on an older device.

Some symbols, such as ❤ and ☺, exist in two styles: plain text and colourful emoji. The emoji counter counts them as emoji when they have the emoji style marker or are shown as emoji by default, and reports the plain-text versions separately as “text-style symbols”.
